Heyoke
Quartet of trumpet, flugelhorn, piano, bass and drums.
Recorded by ECM
Who are Heyoka or Heyoke? Kenny did look up the word Heyoke and discovered that they tend to be spontaneous people who are gifted healers that give other’s what they need, instead of what they desire. Heyoka are people that come into contact with other people who ultimately feel better. Sometimes people are unsure how to react to someone they perceive as very different from themselves, and they don’t understand why.
The heyoka is sometimes seen as a kind of sacred clown in the culture of the Sioux of the Great Plains of North America. The Heyoka is a contrarian, jester, and satirist, who speaks, moves and reacts in the opposite fashion to the people around them.
I suspect that Kenny really enjoyed that description as he really enjoyed to be in the company of people who were different.
